Felix followed Serta through the corridors and into the almost empty common room. With the day almost over, most people had gone off to bed. A couple late night scholars sat in chairs reading books and scrolls. Serta and Felix sat at a table off to one side of the common room.
He rubbed at his smooth bald head, feeling cold without his full head of hair. Felix was sure he looked horrid without it and hadn't thought how much he liked having it.
"That was the best defeat I've ever seen," Serta commented.
"Which one?" Felix asked. "The one to the High-Prince or to those in the hand-to-hand combat ring?"
"The High-Prince. No one cares about fighting with fists. I can't believe you lasted that long."
"What was the point of the fight? First, he taunts me and then tries to kill me. And then says he wasn't trying to kill me. I don't get it."
"Normally it was to teach you a simple spell in each of your runes," Serta said. "Then send you in to see if you could use the magic naturally. It's a touch barbaric, but it works on some mages."
"Use it naturally?"
"Some mages can unlock and use magic with little effort or training," Serta said. "They are naturals. They memorize spells like breathing. It just comes easy to them. For others, it's a struggle to get the idea of how to use it no matter how many times or ways you explain it to them."
Felix huffed out air and shook his head. "I'm not sure how I did it. I was going to ask who was giving you books on runes while I wasn't looking?"
Felix clamped his mouth shut.
That voice, Felix thought. If I tell her, it will seem like I am crazy.
"I'm not saying anything," Felix said. "I agreed not to tell."
Serta crossed her arms. "Fine. I will find out who it is and beat them."
"Or thank them. What would have happened if I didn't do as well?"
She narrowed her eyes and bit her lip. "That may be true. We'll talk about this later."
Felix was silent for a long moment. "Are there any other ways to unlock someone's magic?"
"How many people are there in the world?"
"That many?"
"I'm off to bed," Serta said. "You should, too. You have an intense training regime to do. Starting with a first bells fight with the High-Prince."
Iratus entered the common room. A book tucked under one arm, and a candle holder in the other.
"I will," Felix said as Serta walked away.
Iratus sat down at Felix's table.
"I thought you were still learning the language?" Felix asked.
"I was let out yesterday," Iratus said. "It was easy cause I already know some magic runes. I didn't know the Ta'arqa language is based on the runic alphabet."
"Makes sense. They use magic everywhere. Did you notice the magic in the capital?"
"Yeah," Iratus said. "With these runes, I'm afraid we'll never see home again."
"How was your power unlocked?" Felix asked. "Did you have to fight a duel?"
Iratus shook his head. "I didn't.
